The Narrows

MELBOURNE — What sets The Narrows apart is its celebration of the natural affinities between art and design. Directors Warren Taylor and artist partner Anna Ephraim’s interdisciplinary approach brings together the two fields, which are often separated in a white cube context but cross-pollinate constantly in the everyday. In the past The Narrows has exhibited practitioners who are exemplars of this fusion, including Ed Fella, legendary design grandfather of Brazilian Tropicália, Rogério Duarte, and shows such as Posters for Exhibitions.

You’re just as likely to see Warren saving the historical Melbourne Museum of Printing and designing outstanding independent art publication unMagazine, as bringing over international artists (Matthew Hale, Will Sweeney), and a diverse range of locals, including Jon Campbell, Damiano Bertoli, Nathan Gray and Masato Takasaka. This multi-tasking attitude culminates in the gallery’s diverse exhibition schedule.

The attention to detail that grows out of their design ethos is reflected in the limited edition posters created by Warren for each exhibition. Monthly, you can catch the evolving bookshelf curated by local artists, bringing together their favourite books and ones which have inspired their individual practices, as well as a range of handpicked texts and the gallery’s own limited edition publications.
