Elke Kramer doesn't make bracelets, necklaces — she creates objects that dismantle the very idea of desire. We had a chat to Australia's most promising young jewellery designer about flowers, Indonesia, and her favourite place in Sydney to soak in some rays.
UHH — What's been keeping you busy lately? ELKE KRAMER — Been crazy flat out traveling back and forth and back again to Indonesia, where my pieces are hand crafted. In between I am busy being inspired by the myriad of amazing artists and designers at my studio, BJB. And in my spare time I have been getting experimental in the kitchen, I have moved into a house with a brilliant kitchen, re-igniting my passion for culinary wizardry.
UHH — Tell me about your new collection, Look Twice ... ELKE KRAMER — I was inspired by notions of deception and also challenging the idea of portable wealth. The collection plays with precious and non-precious materials to deceive and trick, and also subverts the traditional role of jewellery and adornment.
